The Feuerstein Method
Developed by renowned psychologist Prof. Reuven Feuerstein, the Feuerstein Method has been proven to help learners of all ages improve how they learn. Prof. Feuerstein was revolutionary in his work that demonstrated that cognitive ability is not static; according to Prof. Feuerstein, a person’s cognitive ability is able to be developed using certain strategies.
The Feuerstein Method combines specially designed “instruments” (learning activities) and mediation (the verbal give and take discussing the activity that enhances the learning experience). Using this combination, learners can learn how to work with others, think strategically, communicate effectively, anticipate the results of his/her actions, and more. Used in more than 40 countries, the theories of Prof. Feuerstein have been implemented in schools, clinical settings, and in afterschool enrichment settings for over half a century.
Through utilization of the Feuerstein Method, the learner gains tools to reach higher.
A goal of education is, to assist growth toward greater complexity and integration and to assist in the process of self-organization – to modify individuals’ capacity to modify themselves.
By utilizing Feuerstein, all types of clients can grow beyond their current cognitive abilities. The dedicated staff at Play Thinks have experience working with clients experiencing:
- Typical Learning Ability
- Genetic Conditions
- Brain Injury
- Memory Loss due to Aging
- And more!
Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment (FIE)
The purpose of FIE is to teach learners thinking skills. There are 14 Standard instruments and 11 Basic instruments for children 8 and younger. These instruments are content-free and completed with a pencil and paper. In each lesson, learners gain new cognitive skills like hypothetical thinking, strategizing, and comparing.
The Learning Propensity Assessment Device (LPAD) is a dynamic assessment tool used to determine how a person learns and their potential for growth. The LPAD is made up of several different instruments. Throughout the completion of these instruments, the evaluator will determine which methods of teaching the learner responds best to, how much information they retained, and deficient cognitive functions of the learner. The LPAD is unique in that the learning potential is not based on scores, but rather from observations of repeated responses and mediation. The LPAD provides perspective on the best methods for intervention for the learner and the learner’s unique style of learning.
We provide Feuerstein cognitive enrichment to learners of all ages. If you would like to come in to our office for a demo or to learn more about how Feuerstein can help you or your child, contact us at Grow@playthinks.org.
